About Weighted Grade Calculations
A weighted grade calculation takes into account the relative importance (weight) of different assignments or assessment categories. Not all assignments contribute equally to your final grade, and the weighted grade calculator accounts for these differences.
For example, a final exam might be worth 40% of your grade, while homework assignments collectively make up only 20%. In this case, your performance on the final exam has a much greater impact on your overall grade than any single homework assignment.
How Weighted Grades Work
The formula for calculating a weighted grade is:
Weighted Grade = Σ(Category Score × Category Weight) ÷ Total Weight
For example, if you have three categories:
- Homework (20% weight): 90% score
- Midterm (30% weight): 80% score
- Final Exam (50% weight): 85% score
Your weighted grade would be:
(90 × 0.20) + (80 × 0.30) + (85 × 0.50) = 18 + 24 + 42.5 = 84.5%
Tips for Using the Weighted Grade Calculator
- Check your course syllabus for the exact weight of each assessment category
- Update the calculator throughout the term as you receive new grades
- If the weights don't add up to 100%, the calculator will automatically normalize them
- Use this calculator to determine which categories to focus on for maximum grade improvement
- For categories that include multiple assignments (like "Homework"), enter your average score for all assignments in that category
