How Does Sales Tax Work?
Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by the government on the sale of goods and services. A conventional sales tax is levied at the point of sale, collected by the retailer, and passed on to the government. Our Sales Tax Calculator explicitly and accurately computes your final price with ease.
Calculating Sales Tax
Calculating the total cost including sales tax is a straightforward percentage calculation that involves reliably identifying the tax amount and adding it cleanly to the original price:
Tax Amount = Price × (Tax Rate / 100)Total Price = Price + Tax AmountU.S. Sales Tax Overview
State vs. Local Taxes
In the United States, there is no national sales tax. Instead, sales taxes are levied at the state level, and additionally, local municipalities (cities, counties) can levy their own local sales taxes on top of the state rate. This means the total rate can vary significantly even within the same state depending on the specific city or county.
Exceptions and Tax Holidays
Many states exempt certain goods like unprepared food (groceries) or prescription medication from sales tax to reduce the burden on essential items. Some states also offer temporary "tax holidays" where specific items (like school supplies or clothing) become tax-free for a limited time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sales tax the same as Value-Added Tax (VAT)?
No. Sales tax is applied only at the final point of purchase by the end consumer. Value-Added Tax (VAT), common in many other countries, is collected at every stage of the production and distribution chain.
Which U.S. states do not have a sales tax?
As of now, five U.S. states do not have a statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that Alaska and Montana do allow localities to charge local sales taxes.
