Display Density (PPI)

What is PPI (Pixels Per Inch)?

Pixels Per Inch (PPI) is a critical measurement of display density. It determines how sharp, crisp, and detailed a digital screen appears. By analyzing the total pixel resolution alongside the physical diagonal size of your device, our PPI Calculator explicitly reveals the true visual density of any monitor, smartphone, or tablet.

How is PPI Calculated?

Calculating exact density requires determining the diagonal pixel amount using the Pythagorean theorem, then rigidly mathematically dividing that by the diagonal physical length in inches.

Diagonal Pixels = √(Width² + Height²)PPI = Diagonal Pixels ÷ Diagonal Inches

Understanding "Retina" and Density Thresholds

Smartphones (300 - 500+ PPI)

Because phones are held very closely to your eyes, they require heavily dense screens. Apple originally defined "Retina" as approximately 326 PPI, meaning the naked human eye cannot individually distinguish pixels at roughly 10-12 inches away.

Desktop Monitors (90 - 150+ PPI)

Common PPI Values

  • Standard 24" 1080p Monitor: ~92 PPI
  • 27" 1440p (QHD) Monitor: ~109 PPI
  • 27" 4K Monitor: ~163 PPI
  • iPhone 13/14: ~460 PPI
  • Samsung Galaxy S22: ~425 PPI
  • iPad Pro 12.9: ~264 PPI
