Paint Estimating Tips
The rule of thumb for paint is 1 gallon covers 350 square feet. However, texture matters. Rough or textured walls absorb more paint, reducing coverage to about 250-300 sq ft per gallon.
- Buy in Bulk: If you need 3 or more gallons, it's often cheaper (and better for color consistency) to buy a 5-gallon bucket.
- Dark Colors: Painting a dark color over a light wall usually requires 2 coats. Painting a light color over a dark wall may require a primer coat plus 2 coats of paint.
- Priming: New drywall must be primed. It sucks up paint like a sponge. Don't waste expensive topcoat on unprimed drywall.
