Mulch Calculator
Planning your spring gardening? Determine exactly how many cubic yards or bags of mulch you need to cover your flower beds to the perfect depth.
Mulch Calculator
Bed Dimensions
Standard mulch depth is 2-4 inches.
How Does the Mulch Calculator Work?
Determining the precise amount of mulch you need for your landscaping project can be a tricky exercise in spatial geometry. Buy too little, and you'll be making frustrating back-to-back trips to the garden center. Buy too much, and you'll have extra bags cluttering your driveway or garage.
Our specialized Mulch Calculator eliminates the guesswork by converting standard linear garden dimensions (feet and inches) directly into total cubic volume, and estimating how many standard 2-cubic-foot bags you will need to purchase.
The Mulch Calculation Formula
Calculating mulch requirements requires measuring your garden bed's surface area and multiplying it by your desired mulch depth. Because depth is usually measured in inches, it must first be mathematically converted to feet.
Volume (Cubic Feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)Once you have the total cubic feet, interpreting the results depends on how you plan to purchase the mulch:
- Bags (Retail): Standard garden retail bags contain 2 cubic feet of mulch. To find your bag count, divide the total cubic feet by 2.
- Bulk (Wholesale): Landscaping companies deliver bulk mulch measured in "Cubic Yards" (often just called "yards"). There are exactly 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Divide your cubic feet by 27 to find cubic yards.
How Deep Should I Lay Mulch?
Standard Depth (2 to 3 Inches)
This is the widely accepted standard for generic flower beds, borders, and immediately surrounding established trees. It successfully suppresses weed growth and retains soil moisture without suffocating plant roots.
Deep Depth (4+ Inches)
Reserved mostly for neglected overgrown terrain, establishing brand new vigorous beds, or playground areas where fall protection padding is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to buy mulch locally in bags or order bulk delivery?
As a general rule: if your project requires more than 2 or 3 Cubic Yards (roughly 30 to 45 standard bags), ordering a bulk truck delivery is significantly cheaper. For tiny borders requiring 5-10 bags, simply buying retail bags makes more financial sense.
Can piled mulch damage established trees?
Yes. The notorious "mulch volcano" (piling mounds of mulch directly touching the tree trunk bark) is damaging. It encourages trunk rot, attracts wood-boring insects, and starves underlying roots of critical oxygen. Keep mulch exactly 2-3 inches pulled away from the tree trunk.
Bag vs. Bulk: What Should I Buy?
Bagged Mulch
- Pros: Easy to transport, clean, easier to distribute in small beds.
- Cons: More expensive per cubic foot, more plastic waste.
- Best for: Projects under 2 cubic yards (< 27 bags).
Bulk Mulch
- Pros: Significantly cheaper (often 50% less), package-free.
- Cons: Requires delivery fee or truck, messy to unload.
- Best for: Large landscaping projects (> 3 cubic yards).
Coverage Chart (per cubic yard)
| Depth | Coverage (sq ft) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 324 sq ft | Thin cosmetic layer |
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | Standard depth |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | Good for weed control |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | Max recommended |
