How to Convert Percentage to GPA (and Vice Versa)

Many countries and academic systems use percentage-based grading, while US colleges and most international graduate programs require a GPA on the 4.0 scale. Converting between the two — accurately — is essential for applications, scholarship forms, and transcript evaluations. This guide gives you the exact tables, formulas, and country-specific context you need.

Why Convert Between Percentage and GPA?

Percentage grading and GPA represent the same academic performance on different scales. You need to convert when applying to US graduate schools from a percentage-based system (India, UK, Australia, Bangladesh, etc.), when a scholarship application requires a 4.0-scale GPA but your transcript shows percentages, or when comparing your grades internationally. Most US universities and programs will accept a converted GPA from a percentage, but you should use the most widely accepted conversion method and note the original percentage on your application.

How to Convert: Step by Step

  1. Find your percentage score in the left column of the table above.
  2. Read across to the corresponding GPA value on the 4.0 scale.
  3. If your percentage falls between two rows, round down to the lower GPA value (or use the midpoint).
  4. For multi-subject averages, calculate your average percentage first, then look up the GPA equivalent.
  5. Always note on applications that your GPA is a converted figure and include the original percentage for transparency.

Country-Specific Conversion Notes

India (CGPA 10.0 Scale)

For undergraduate programs using CGPA on a 10-point scale, WES (World Education Services) and most US grad programs use CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 = 4.0 GPA equivalent. Example: CGPA of 8.5 → 8.5 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.4 GPA. See our CGPA to Percentage Calculator.

UK (First, 2:1, 2:2 Classification)

UK degree classifications roughly map as: First Class (≥70%) ≈ 4.0; Upper Second 2:1 (60–69%) ≈ 3.3–3.7; Lower Second 2:2 (50–59%) ≈ 2.7–3.0; Third (40–49%) ≈ 2.0. These are approximations — individual US programs may use their own conversion matrices.

Bangladesh & Pakistan

Both countries typically use percentage grading at A-level and degree level. WES converts these directly using the standard scale above. For CGPA 4.0-based systems (increasingly common at private universities), no conversion is needed.

Australia (HD/D/Cr/P/F)

Australian universities use a 7-point scale (HD = 7, D = 6, Cr = 5, P = 4, F = 0) mapped to percentage bands. WES equates these to 4.0-scale GPA for US applications. HD (75–100%) converts to approximately 4.0.

GPA to Percentage: Reverse Conversion

To convert a 4.0-scale GPA back to a percentage equivalent, use this simple formula:

Approximate Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
Example: GPA 3.5 → (3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%

This is an approximation. The exact percentage range for a given GPA varies by institution's grading scale. For precise conversions, use your institution's published grade scale.
