How to Use the Grade Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate your weighted course grade from any syllabus:
Identify Assessment Categories
Check your syllabus for all graded components — homework, quizzes, tests, midterm, final exam, participation, projects, labs, etc.
Enter Weight Percentages
Input the weight for each category exactly as listed in your syllabus. Weights should total 100%, but the calculator normalizes automatically if they don't.
Input Your Scores
Enter your current average or earned percentage for each completed category. For in-progress categories, enter your running average.
Add More Categories
Click "Add Category" to include additional assessment types. Our calculator supports unlimited categories for complex course structures.
Calculate & Analyze
Click "Calculate Grade" to see your weighted overall grade. Adjust scores to run what-if scenarios for upcoming assignments.
Weighted Grade Formula
Overall Grade = Σ (Category Score × Category Weight) ÷ Σ (Category Weights)
Each category contributes proportionally based on its syllabus weight
Example: Psychology 101
- • Homework (20%): 88%
- • Quizzes (15%): 92%
- • Midterm (25%): 78%
- • Research Paper (15%): 95%
- • Final Exam (25%): 85%
(88×0.20) + (92×0.15) + (78×0.25) + (95×0.15) + (85×0.25)
= 17.6 + 13.8 + 19.5 + 14.25 + 21.25 = 86.4% (B+)

Worked Example: What Do I Need on the Final?
| Scenario | Current | Goal | Final Weight | Need on Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep my A | 92% | 90% | 30% | 85.3% |
| Raise to B+ | 82% | 87% | 25% | 102% ❌ |
| Pass the class | 68% | 60% | 40% | 48.0% |
❌ means the required score is over 100% — mathematically impossible without extra credit. For instant results, use our Final Grade Calculator.
