How to Track MPG accurately

Most modern cars have an MPG display, but manually calculating it is often more accurate. Here is how to do it at the pump:

  1. Fill your tank completely until the pump clicks off.
  2. Reset your Trip Odometer to zero (or record your current mileage).
  3. Drive as usual until you need gas again.
  4. Fill the tank completely again. Note exactly how many gallons it took to fill up.
  5. Divide the miles on your trip odometer by the gallons you just pumped.

Average MPG by Vehicle Type (2024)
