How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

This calculator helps you determine what score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall course grade.

  1. Enter your current grade in the course (before taking the final exam)
  2. Input your desired final grade for the course
  3. Specify the weight of the final exam (what percentage of your overall grade it represents)
  4. Click "Calculate Required Score" to see what you need to earn on the final

Understanding the Calculation

The final exam score is calculated using this formula:

Required Final Score = (Desired Final Grade × 100 - Current Grade × (100 - Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

For example, if your current grade is 75%, you want a final grade of 80%, and the final exam is worth 30% of your overall grade:

Required Final Score = (80 × 100 - 75 × (100 - 30)) ÷ 30 = (8000 - 5250) ÷ 30 = 91.67%

This means you would need to score at least 91.67% on your final exam to achieve an overall grade of 80% in the course.
