How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
Follow these steps to find out exactly what you need on your final exam:
Enter Your Current Grade
Input your current grade percentage before taking the final. Check your course portal or calculate it with our Grade Calculator.
Enter Your Desired Grade
What overall grade do you want? Enter 90 for an A−, 80 for a B−, or any target percentage.
Enter the Final Exam Weight
How much is the final worth? Check your syllabus — common weights are 20%, 25%, 30%, or 40%.
Click Calculate
The calculator instantly shows the minimum score you need on the final to reach your goal.
Interpret the Result
If the result is ≤100%, it's achievable. If it's over 100%, lower your target or ask about extra credit.
The Final Grade Formula
There are two essential formulas — one to find what you need on the final, and one to find your overall grade after taking it:
What Do I Need on the Final?
F = (G − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w
F = needed final score, G = goal grade, C = current grade, w = final weight (as decimal)
What's My Overall Grade?
G = C × (1 − w) + F × w
G = overall grade, C = current grade, F = final exam score, w = final weight (as decimal)
Common Scenarios
Here are real-world examples showing what different students need on their finals:
| Scenario | Current | Goal | Final Weight | Need on Final | Achievable? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maintain an A | 94% | 90% | 25% | 78.0% | ✅ Yes |
| Raise B to A− | 87% | 90% | 30% | 97.0% | ⚠️ Difficult |
| Raise C to B | 75% | 80% | 20% | 100% | ⚠️ Perfect score |
| Raise C+ to A | 78% | 90% | 25% | 126% | ❌ Impossible |
| Just pass (D→C) | 65% | 70% | 40% | 77.5% | ✅ Yes |
Quick Questions Answered
Can the final save my grade?
The heavier the final, the more it can move your grade. A 40%-weight final can swing your grade by up to 40 points. A 20% final can only move it 20 points. If you need a massive jump (e.g., D to B), you likely need a very heavy final or extra credit.
How much can the final hurt me?
Even the worst-case (0% on the final) won't drop you more than the final's weight. If the final is 25%, the maximum drop is 25 points from your current grade. If you have a 92% and the final is 25%, the worst case is 92×0.75 = 69%.
What if I skip the final entirely?
Skipping = scoring 0%. Your grade becomes: Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight). With 90% and a 30% final: 90 × 0.70 = 63% (D). Most schools also have attendance policies that may result in failing the course entirely if you miss the final.
