How Dual Enrollment Affects GPA

Dual Enrollment (DE) or Dual Credit courses are college classes taken by high school students. They often have a significant impact on your GPA for two reasons:

  • Weighted Credit: Many high schools treat DE classes like AP or IB courses, awarding them an extra point (e.g., an A is 5.0 instead of 4.0).
  • College Transcript: These grades start your permanent college GPA. Doing well gives you a head start; doing poorly can follow you.

Credits Conversion

One common point of confusion is credits.

  • College: A typical semester course is 3.0 credits.
  • High School: That same course usually counts as 1.0 credit (one year) or 0.5 credits (one semester) on your HS transcript.

Tip: When using this calculator for your High School GPA, use the credit value assigned by your high school (usually 1.0 or 0.5). When calculating for your College GPA, use the college credit value (usually 3.0 or 4.0).
