The "Double Discount" Trap

Retailers love to advertise deals like "Take an EXTRA 20% off already reduced prices!" It sounds amazing—if an item is already 50% off and you get another 20% off, that's 70% off, right? Wrong.

Discounts are multiplicative, not additive.

  • Start with $100.
  • Take 50% off -> Price is now $50.
  • Take 20% off the $50 (which is $10) -> Price is now $40.
  • Total paid: $40. Total discount: 60%.

Our calculator handles this math for you automatically so you know exactly what to expect at the register.

Common Discount Types

Percentage Off

Most common (e.g., 20% off). The saving grows with the price.

Fixed Amount Off

"$10 off coupon". Better for lower-priced items.

BOGO (Buy One Get One)

"Buy One Get One Free" is essentially 50% off if you buy two items.

Bulk Discount

Lower price per unit when buying large quantities.
